Our Travels

Big day for Jess!

So last week I decided to take a cab to play group instead of driving (terrible traffic during the week and not a direct bus route) and after realizing my Russian speaking neighbor's husband was not home I had to use "Plan B". Plan B was to have the concierge (Deszornia) call for me, which was interesting because of the whole language barrier issue. My Russian is embarrassingly limited so I said "please"and "now" and pointed to my cell phone then a business card for a taxi service and then finally to the address where I needed to go. She started to ask me a million questions to which my only reply was to repeat the above sequence and to smile. It worked, my taxi came and took me to the place I needed to go! Fantastic! I then had someone's Russian speaking nanny order the cab for our return ride home.

Soo... during my language lesson last week we practised ordering a taxi by phone and guess what?? Today I called and ordered my own taxi in Russian!! Yippee! Better yet, I ended up at the right place and even on time. Granted, I did practise all morning and had a cheat sheet written all up to take with me so I could also get home as well (which we did!!) When I couldn't understand the questions they were asking I just proceeded to the next line on my cheet sheet.

I know this seems like such a simple feat but, trust me, with the language barrier it's a huge feat! Eric and I have hailed taxi's on the street but that's easier as you don't have to tell them where you are just where your going or point to it on a map. At any rate, I'm super proud of myself! There is an English speaking taxi service but they are more expensive and I'm cheap!

Yay! Congrats on mastering the important bits of the language. Just think - now you can go anywhere. :)

I knew you could do it if you put your mind to it. You have always been that way. :) Mom
